Farro co-founder, Janene Draper picked it as one of the biggest food trends for 2019 in our Farroscopes back in January and since then we’ve had a flurry of new hemp-based products coming into our new product tastings at Farro. The recent legalisation that allowed hemp to be used as an ingredient in New Zealand, has seen the superfood be incorporated into oils, plant-based milk and even yoghurt, bread and beer!

While it’s popularity is flourishing, it’s still a relatively misunderstood food ingredient. Will it make your high or just healthy? Now one of 2019’s biggest food trends, here’s everything you need to know of the superfood.

What part of the cannabis plant is used or allowed?

According to the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries, the only part of the low THC Cannabis sativa plant allowed to be used as an ingredient in food is the seed. Food made of the leaves, flowers, buds, stems or any other part of the plant is not allowed.

What are the health benefits of hemp?

Although hemp seeds come from the Cannabis Sativa plant, they will not produce a mind-altering effect. There are a number of health benefits of consuming the seeds, however. These include:

Protein - Hemp seeds are a complete source of protein  

Unsaturated fats – Hemp seeds are high in Omega 3 and 6 and are low in saturated fats.

Fibre – By incorporating fibre in your diet it can help you control blood sugars, lower cholesterol levels, and help maintain bowel health.

Minerals and vitamins – Hemp seeds contain a number of essential vitamins and minerals including potassium, vitamin E, Folate and more.

What does it taste like?

Hemp seeds are nutty, buttery and earthy in flavour and similar to pumpkin seeds in the way that are crunchy and slightly chewy.

Can I cook with hemp?

Absolutely. Hemp seeds are incredibly versatile and can be used for in sweet or savoury dishes. We recommend treating hemp seeds similar to how you would with chia or sunflower seeds and sprinkle on top of salads and sides, add to baking burgers or stir into soups and sauces. How do I store hemp seeds?

Once opened, store in an airtight container in the fridge. You can store in your pantry or at room temperature however by refrigerating them, you’ll extend the shelf life.
