The varied terrains of family-owned vineyards at Waiheke Island, Marlborough and Central Otago yield the distinctive style and personality of SOHO wines.
An elegant chardonnay, a delicate pinot noir or a fragrant rosé: whatever your preference, SOHO’s vineyards consistently produce top drops. With 73 gold medals and multiple trophies, SOHO’s portfolio is made up of premium Black Collection, White Collection and the Pink Sheep Charity Collection, which donates to four charities that encompass mental health, children, animals and the environment.
SOHO’s wines stem from Carter family-owned vineyards in Marlborough and Waiheke, as well as other small family-owned vineyards in central Otago. SOHO founder Rachael Carter’s late father John bought the vineyards and he remains her mentor for his tireless work ethic, humour and a cheeky grin – a sense of fun that she imbues the SOHO team with.
On the winemaking front, Rachael explains that the favourite part of the winemaking process is blending – varying the flavour and texture of a wine depending on a particular clone, vineyard or barrel.
“Our Waiheke winemaker James Rowan has a saying ‘Wine like life is about texture. The fruit decides the style, we just guide it down the path, teasing out the nuances, playing in the shadows.’ This to me is what I love about wine the most, it is very textural and always evolving.” Rachael says her favourite wine this summer is the 2020 Pink Sheep rosé. “It is bone dry and great on the waistline with under 1.5g of sugar. I am planning to pair it with a baked salmon fillet and a fresh summer salad.”
