Nestled two hours north of Auckland lies the sleepy settlement of Maungatapere – home to three generations of the Malley family and their beautiful farm that produces the succulent blueberries, blackberries and raspberries found on Farro shelves.
While having a background in horticulture, the Malleys are relative newcomers to the berry industry, yet have made leaps and bounds since their first crop in 2016 and were named a finalist in the NZ Food Awards in 2017.
Quality and freshness are the key ideas that underpin their business. The berries are picked, packed and dispatched on the same day and on Farro shelves the next morning.
“Most people have the expectation that our berries can be eaten straight from the punnet, and we wanted to create a product which is safe to do so. To achieve this, we’ve placed a strong emphasis on food safety practices and ensure to use natural methods rather than sprays to keep out predators,” says Patrick Malley.
The family not only treat their berries with love but give back to the local community as much as they can.
“We are proud to retain a 100 per cent local workforce and try to get our seasonal staff involved in different areas of the business to give more long-term and meaningful employment.”
